Description

This piece measures 4in x 3in x 1.5 and is composed of very thin pieces of clay that is leftover when I throw a pot on the pottery wheel. This “scrap” clay is often overlooked and thrown away by artists. Instead, I recycle these then slabs by quickly removing them from my wheel and forming abstract shapes. This sculpture is comprised of 11 different scraps to form the shape. After glazing the pieces I paint 22K gold luster (the liquid version of gold) onto the piece, then fire it in the kiln to 1900 degrees.

I believe in sustainable art practices, which is what started this project of collecting clay scraps for sculptures. When I look at these, then often remind me women’s bodies and the unseen work of women. We are required to be malleable to society, but are often undervalued for the mental and physical work we endure.
